John McMinn Building Studio

The project involved transformation of a derelict back lane automotive repair shop to a two part building, housing a commercial photography studio and a single family residence which includes a landscaped court. The two parts of the project required distinctly different spatial strategies, with the studio being almost entirely inwardly focused, while the aim of the residence with its external court on the West, was to establish a reciprocal pairing between interior and external spaces. The residence includes public rooms on the ground level opening on to the court, while the upper level incorporates bedrooms with an open plan lounge, leading onto a deck overlooking the court. Materials throughout the project are simple and elegant with a palette including natural stained cedar and maple, tiger's eye slate and clear lacquered mild and stainless steel.
